The Council of Law Reporting

for New South Wales

The Council of Law Reporting for NSW was established under the Council of Law Reporting Act 1969. Its overall goal is the efficient reporting of judicial decisions in NSW, primarily for the benefit of the legal profession and the judiciary. The Council's principal objectives are:

·  to select judgments for reporting in NSWLR
·  to make judgments efficient to use by preparing reliable headnotes and other editorial material, such as indices and tables of cases cited in judgments
·  to ensure that reports published in the NSWLR are as accurate as possible, by verifying all details such as citations and cross references
·  to publish NSWLR as promptly and inexpensively as possible, without compromising quality.

Council management and operations

The judgments included in the NSWLR are selected by the Editor, Bret Walker SC, who is appointed by the Council. As one of the most highly regarded barristers in NSW he is well placed to identify decisions of lasting value as the legal precedent for the State. The headnotes for these judgments are drafted by law reporters and confirmed by the Editor. At the same time, the text of the judgments is checked and copyedited by Council staff. The process is coordinated by the Council’s Assistant Editors.

The Council’s operations are managed from the Council office:
